A solution has a concentration of 0.0650 mol/L…

StemPy LabContributed by StemPy Lab

Try it on paper first. A hint, the key idea and the worked solution are here when you need them.

A solution has a concentration of 0.0650 mol/L0.0650\ \text{mol/L}0.0650 mol/L. It is placed in a cell with a cell constant of 130 m−1130\ \text{m}^{-1}130 m−1, and the cell reads 250 Ω250\ \Omega250 Ω. Find the conductivity, and the molar conductivity in S cm2/mol\text{S cm}^2/\text{mol}S cm2/mol and in S m2/mol\text{S m}^2/\text{mol}S m2/mol.

Check your answer

Work it out on paper, then type your number. The answer itself stays hidden.

The molar conductivity is Λm=κc\Lambda_m = \dfrac{\kappa}{c}Λm=cκ. With κ\kappaκ in S/m\text{S/m}S/m and ccc in mol/L\text{mol/L}mol/L, Λm=10 κc\Lambda_m = \dfrac{10\,\kappa}{c}Λm=c10κ in S cm2/mol\text{S cm}^2/\text{mol}S cm2/mol. With κ\kappaκ in S/cm\text{S/cm}S/cm, Λm=1000 κc\Lambda_m = \dfrac{1000\,\kappa}{c}Λm=c1000κ. A strong electrolyte follows Λm=Λm∘−Ac\Lambda_m = \Lambda_m^\circ - A\sqrt{c}Λm=Λm∘−Ac. For a weak electrolyte, α=ΛmΛm∘\alpha = \dfrac{\Lambda_m}{\Lambda_m^\circ}α=Λm∘Λm.

The worked solution

Have you tried it?

Work it out on paper first. It is fine to get stuck or make a mistake: that is how we learn. When you are ready, go through the solution one step at a time, and check each step against your own.

Step 1. The conductivity. κ=G∗R=130 m−1250 Ω=0.520 S/m\kappa = \dfrac{G^*}{R} = \dfrac{130\ \text{m}^{-1}}{250\ \Omega} = 0.520\ \text{S/m}κ=RG∗=250 Ω130 m−1=0.520 S/m.

Step 2. The concentration in SI. 0.0650 mol/L=65.0 mol/m30.0650\ \text{mol/L} = 65.0\ \text{mol/m}^30.0650 mol/L=65.0 mol/m3.

Step 3. The molar conductivity in SI. Λm=κc=0.520 S/m65.0 mol/m3=0.00800 S m2/mol\Lambda_m = \dfrac{\kappa}{c} = \dfrac{0.520\ \text{S/m}}{65.0\ \text{mol/m}^3} = 0.00800\ \text{S m}^2/\text{mol}Λm=cκ=65.0 mol/m30.520 S/m=0.00800 S m2/mol.

Step 4. In S cm²/mol. Multiply by 10410^4104: Λm=80.0 S cm2/mol\Lambda_m = 80.0\ \text{S cm}^2/\text{mol}Λm=80.0 S cm2/mol.

Check. The shortcut 10 κc=10×0.5200.0650=80.0 S cm2/mol\dfrac{10\,\kappa}{c} = \dfrac{10 \times 0.520}{0.0650} = 80.0\ \text{S cm}^2/\text{mol}c10κ=0.065010×0.520=80.0 S cm2/mol agrees.

Answer: 0.520 S/m0.520\ \text{S/m}0.520 S/m, 80.0 S cm2/mol80.0\ \text{S cm}^2/\text{mol}80.0 S cm2/mol and 0.00800 S m2/mol0.00800\ \text{S m}^2/\text{mol}0.00800 S m2/mol.
