Try it on paper first. A hint, the key idea and the worked solution are here when you need them.
A leg muscle ferments mol of glucose to lactic acid in a sprint. One mole of glucose holds kJ, and one mole of ATP holds kJ.
Without oxygen, pyruvic acid takes the hydrogen of NADH, and NAD is made again. Alcoholic fermentation: pyruvic acid decarboxylase gives acetaldehyde and carbon dioxide, then alcohol dehydrogenase gives ethanol. Lactic acid fermentation: lactate dehydrogenase gives lactic acid and no carbon dioxide. The net gain is ATP for each glucose.
Have you tried it?
Work it out on paper first. It is fine to get stuck or make a mistake: that is how we learn. When you are ready, go through the solution one step at a time, and check each step against your own.
Given. Glucose: mol.
Plan. Use the balance for one glucose, then compare with the energy of the glucose.
Step 1. Lactic acid. mol.
Step 2. ATP. mol.
Step 3. Energy kept. kJ.
Step 4. Share. The glucose holds kJ. .
Step 5. The ache. Lactic acid builds up in the muscle and causes the ache.
Answer: mol; mol; kJ; ; lactic acid collects.
Check. The share is far below the of complete respiration.
