A lead storage battery is rated at 50 A h…

StemPy LabContributed by StemPy Lab

Try it on paper first. A hint, the key idea and the worked solution are here when you need them.

A lead storage battery is rated at 50 A h50\ \text{A h}50 A h. How much charge is that, in coulombs? How many hours can it supply a steady current of 4.0 A4.0\ \text{A}4.0 A?

Check your answer

Work it out on paper, then type your number. The answer itself stays hidden.

One ampere-hour is 3600 C3600\ \text{C}3600 C. A lead atom gives 2 electrons in the lead storage battery, a zinc atom gives 2 in the dry cell and an iron atom gives 2 when it rusts. Energy is VItVItVIt. A fuel cell converts the energy of H2+12O2→H2O\text{H}_2 + \tfrac{1}{2}\text{O}_2 \rightarrow \text{H}_2\text{O}H2+21O2→H2O directly into electricity. Zinc, with a lower potential than iron, protects it.

The worked solution

Have you tried it?

Work it out on paper first. It is fine to get stuck or make a mistake: that is how we learn. When you are ready, go through the solution one step at a time, and check each step against your own.

Step 1. Charge. 50×3600=180 000 C50 \times 3600 = 180\,000\ \text{C}50×3600=180000 C.

Step 2. Time. t=50 A h4.0 A=12.5 ht = \dfrac{50\ \text{A h}}{4.0\ \text{A}} = 12.5\ \text{h}t=4.0 A50 A h=12.5 h.

Answer: 180 000 C180\,000\ \text{C}180000 C, and 12.5 h12.5\ \text{h}12.5 h.

Check. Using seconds: 180 0004.0=45 000 s\dfrac{180\,000}{4.0} = 45\,000\ \text{s}4.0180000=45000 s, which is 12.5 hours.
