Try it on paper first. A hint, the key idea and the worked solution are here when you need them.
A gardener lays out a flower bed on level ground. With a corner post as the origin and distances in metres, one edge of the bed follows the curve and the other edge is the straight line . The bed lies between the two edges. Find the larger value of at which the curved edge meets the straight edge. Then find the area of the bed.
The area between an upper curve and a lower curve is , where and are the meeting points. A parabola cut by a line has area , where is the distance between the meeting points.
Have you tried it?
Work it out on paper first. It is fine to get stuck or make a mistake: that is how we learn. When you are ready, go through the solution one step at a time, and check each step against your own.
Step 1. Meeting points. gives , so or .
Step 2. Which is above? At the curve gives and the line gives , so the curve is above.
Step 3. The area. .
Check. The shortcut gives .
Answer: the larger meeting point is m, and the area is .
