Tangents and normals Gradient (slope): the gradient of the tangent at ( x 0 , y 0 ) (x_0, y_0) ( x 0 , y 0 ) is f ′ ( x 0 ) f'(x_0) f ′ ( x 0 ) . Tangent: y − y 0 = f ′ ( x 0 ) ( x − x 0 ) y - y_0 = f'(x_0)(x - x_0) y − y 0 = f ′ ( x 0 ) ( x − x 0 ) . Normal: gradient − 1 f ′ ( x 0 ) -\dfrac{1}{f'(x_0)} − f ′ ( x 0 ) 1 , through the same point. A horizontal tangent has the vertical normal x = x 0 x = x_0 x = x 0 . Implicit and parametric curves: differentiate both sides, or use d y d x = d y / d t d x / d t \dfrac{dy}{dx} = \dfrac{dy/dt}{dx/dt} d x d y = d x / d t d y / d t . Given directions and angles Parallel to a line of gradient m m m : f ′ ( x ) = m f'(x) = m f ′ ( x ) = m . Perpendicular: f ′ ( x ) = − 1 m f'(x) = -\dfrac{1}{m} f ′ ( x ) = − m 1 . Horizontal: f ′ ( x ) = 0 f'(x) = 0 f ′ ( x ) = 0 . From an outside point: let the point of contact be ( t , f ( t ) ) (t, f(t)) ( t , f ( t )) , write the tangent, and solve for t t t . Angle between curves: tan φ = ∣ m 1 − m 2 1 + m 1 m 2 ∣ \tan\varphi = \left|\dfrac{m_1 - m_2}{1 + m_1m_2}\right| tan φ = 1 + m 1 m 2 m 1 − m 2 . Equal gradients mean they touch. m 1 m 2 = − 1 m_1m_2 = -1 m 1 m 2 = − 1 means they cut at a right angle. Small changes and errors Differential: d y = f ′ ( x ) d x dy = f'(x)\,dx d y = f ′ ( x ) d x , and f ( x + d x ) ≈ f ( x ) + f ′ ( x ) d x f(x + dx) \approx f(x) + f'(x)\,dx f ( x + d x ) ≈ f ( x ) + f ′ ( x ) d x . Errors: absolute d x dx d x , relative d x x \dfrac{dx}{x} x d x , percentage d x x × 100 % \dfrac{dx}{x} \times 100\% x d x × 100% . Powers: for y = x n y = x^n y = x n , the relative error in y y y is n n n times that in x x x . Radians: use radians when the derivative of a sine or cosine is used. A worked example Find the tangent to y = x 2 − 4 x + 7 y = x^2 - 4x + 7 y = x 2 − 4 x + 7 at x = 3 x = 3 x = 3 , and use it to estimate y y y at x = 3.05 x = 3.05 x = 3.05 .
The point and gradient. y 0 = 4 y_0 = 4 y 0 = 4 and d y d x = 2 x − 4 = 2 \dfrac{dy}{dx} = 2x - 4 = 2 d x d y = 2 x − 4 = 2 . The tangent. y − 4 = 2 ( x − 3 ) y - 4 = 2(x - 3) y − 4 = 2 ( x − 3 ) , so y = 2 x − 2 y = 2x - 2 y = 2 x − 2 . The estimate. y ( 3.05 ) ≈ 4 + 2 × 0.05 = 4.1 y(3.05) \approx 4 + 2 \times 0.05 = 4.1 y ( 3.05 ) ≈ 4 + 2 × 0.05 = 4.1 . The exact value is 4.1025 4.1025 4.1025 . Practice with new numbers
A program to try The program finds the tangent and the normal at x = 3 x = 3 x = 3 for the curve above, and compares the estimate of f ( 3.02 ) f(3.02) f ( 3.02 ) with the exact value.
Run it. How close is the estimate to the exact value?
1. Change 3.02 to 3.5. Does the estimate get better or worse?
Mistakes to avoid Using f ( x 0 ) f(x_0) f ( x 0 ) for the gradient. The gradient is f ′ ( x 0 ) f'(x_0) f ′ ( x 0 ) . Forgetting the minus sign and the reciprocal for the normal.
