Periodic motion A periodic motion repeats after a fixed time, the period T T T , in seconds. An oscillation is a periodic motion to and fro about a mean position. Frequency: f = 1 T f = \dfrac{1}{T} f = T 1 , in hertz. The equation of SHM x = A cos ( ω t + ϕ ) x = A\cos(\omega t + \phi) x = A cos ( ω t + ϕ ) . A A A is the amplitude , ω t + ϕ \omega t + \phi ω t + ϕ the phase , ϕ \phi ϕ the phase constant . Angular frequency: ω = 2 π T = 2 π f \omega = \dfrac{2\pi}{T} = 2\pi f ω = T 2 π = 2 π f , in rad/s. SHM is the foot, on a diameter, of a point moving round a circle of radius A A A at a steady speed. Velocity and acceleration v = − ω A sin ( ω t + ϕ ) v = -\omega A\sin(\omega t + \phi) v = − ω A sin ( ω t + ϕ ) . At the position x x x , ∣ v ∣ = ω A 2 − x 2 |v| = \omega\sqrt{A^2 - x^2} ∣ v ∣ = ω A 2 − x 2 . a = − ω 2 x a = -\omega^2 x a = − ω 2 x : always towards the mean position. At the mean position: ∣ v ∣ = ω A |v| = \omega A ∣ v ∣ = ω A is largest and a = 0 a = 0 a = 0 . At the ends: v = 0 v = 0 v = 0 and ∣ a ∣ = ω 2 A |a| = \omega^2 A ∣ a ∣ = ω 2 A is largest. v v v leads x x x by π / 2 \pi/2 π /2 . a a a leads x x x by π \pi π . A worked example A body moves in SHM with an amplitude of 3 cm 3\ \text{cm} 3 cm at 4 Hz 4\ \text{Hz} 4 Hz . Find its largest speed and largest acceleration.
Angular frequency. ω = 2 π × 4 Hz = 25.1 rad/s \omega = 2\pi \times 4\ \text{Hz} = 25.1\ \text{rad/s} ω = 2 π × 4 Hz = 25.1 rad/s . Largest speed. v m a x = 25.1 rad/s × 0.03 m = 0.754 m/s v_{max} = 25.1\ \text{rad/s} \times 0.03\ \text{m} = 0.754\ \text{m/s} v ma x = 25.1 rad/s × 0.03 m = 0.754 m/s . Largest acceleration. a m a x = ( 25.1 rad/s ) 2 × 0.03 m = 18.9 m/s 2 a_{max} = (25.1\ \text{rad/s})^2 \times 0.03\ \text{m} = 18.9\ \text{m/s}^2 a ma x = ( 25.1 rad/s ) 2 × 0.03 m = 18.9 m/s 2 . Practice with new numbers
A program to try The program works through the example above, and adds the speed at half the amplitude.
Run it. Compare the first four lines with the worked example.
1. Change f = 4.0 to f = 8.0. Which numbers double, and which become four times as large?
