A brief note on Refraction of Light . Read it before a test. Try each question at the end before you open its answer.
The big ideas Light bends at a boundary because its speed changes . Into an optically denser material (larger n n n ) it bends toward the normal; into a rarer one, away from it. Along the normal, it does not bend. Snell's law: sin i sin r \dfrac{\sin i}{\sin r} sin r sin i is constant for two materials. From air, sin r = sin i n \sin r = \dfrac{\sin i}{n} sin r = n sin i . The refractive index n = c v n = \dfrac{c}{v} n = v c has no unit and is never below 1 1 1 . A glass slab sends a ray out parallel to the way it came, shifted sideways. Looking straight down, water looks shallower: apparent depth = real depth n = \dfrac{\text{real depth}}{n} = n real depth . The facts at a glance Material n n n Speed of light Air 1.0003 1.0003 1.0003 3.00 × 10 8 m/s 3.00 \times 10^{8}\ \text{m/s} 3.00 × 1 0 8 m/s Water 1.33 1.33 1.33 2.26 × 10 8 m/s 2.26 \times 10^{8}\ \text{m/s} 2.26 × 1 0 8 m/s Glass 1.5 1.5 1.5 2.00 × 10 8 m/s 2.00 \times 10^{8}\ \text{m/s} 2.00 × 1 0 8 m/s Diamond 2.42 2.42 2.42 1.24 × 10 8 m/s 1.24 \times 10^{8}\ \text{m/s} 1.24 × 1 0 8 m/s
A worked example A ray goes from air into a clear liquid ( n = 1.36 n = 1.36 n = 1.36 ) at 45 ∘ 45^\circ 4 5 ∘ . Find the angle of refraction and the speed of light in the liquid.
The angle. sin r = sin 45 ∘ 1.36 = 0.707 1.36 = 0.520 \sin r = \dfrac{\sin 45^\circ}{1.36} = \dfrac{0.707}{1.36} = 0.520 sin r = 1.36 sin 4 5 ∘ = 1.36 0.707 = 0.520 , so r = 31.3 ∘ r = 31.3^\circ r = 31. 3 ∘ . The speed. v = 3.00 × 10 8 m/s 1.36 = 2.21 × 10 8 m/s v = \dfrac{3.00 \times 10^{8}\ \text{m/s}}{1.36} = 2.21 \times 10^{8}\ \text{m/s} v = 1.36 3.00 × 1 0 8 m/s = 2.21 × 1 0 8 m/s . Check. The ray bends toward the normal, and the light is slower than in air. Practice with new numbers
A program to try The program finds the angle of refraction and the speed of light for a few materials.
Read it, then run it. Which material bends the ray most?
1. Add diamond, with n = 2.42 n = 2.42 n = 2.42 . What angle do you get?
Mistakes to avoid Measuring angles from the surface. Use the normal, as for mirrors. Dividing the angle by n n n . Divide its sine. 'Optically denser means heavier.' Kerosene floats on water but has the larger n n n . Multiplying the depth by n n n . Things under water look shallower, so divide. Check yourself Which bends a ray from air more: water or glass?
