A brief note on Molecules, Ions and Formulae . Read it before a test. Try each question at the end before you open its answer.
The big ideas A molecule is a group of joined atoms; its atomicity is the number of atoms in it. An ion has a charge: a cation lost electrons (positive), an anion gained them (negative). Polyatomic ions are groups with one charge: OH − \text{OH}^- OH − , NO 3 − \text{NO}_3^- NO 3 − , NH 4 + \text{NH}_4^+ NH 4 + , CO 3 2 − \text{CO}_3^{2-} CO 3 2 − , SO 4 2 − \text{SO}_4^{2-} SO 4 2 − , PO 4 3 − \text{PO}_4^{3-} PO 4 3 − . Valency is the combining capacity. Criss-cross : cross the valencies over, simplify, and bracket a group used more than once. Valencies at a glance Valency Examples 1 H, Na, K, Cl, OH, NO 3 \text{NO}_3 NO 3 , NH 4 \text{NH}_4 NH 4 2 O, Mg, Ca, CO 3 \text{CO}_3 CO 3 , SO 4 \text{SO}_4 SO 4 3 Al, N, PO 4 \text{PO}_4 PO 4
A worked example Write the formulas of sodium phosphate and aluminium carbonate, and count the atoms in one unit of aluminium carbonate.
Sodium phosphate. Na \text{Na} Na is 1 1 1 and PO 4 \text{PO}_4 PO 4 is 3 3 3 : Na 3 PO 4 \text{Na}_3\text{PO}_4 Na 3 PO 4 . Aluminium carbonate. Al \text{Al} Al is 3 3 3 and CO 3 \text{CO}_3 CO 3 is 2 2 2 : Al 2 ( CO 3 ) 3 \text{Al}_2(\text{CO}_3)_3 Al 2 ( CO 3 ) 3 . Atoms. 2 2 2 Al + 3 + 3 + 3 C + 3 × 3 + 3 \times 3 + 3 × 3 O = 14 = 14 = 14 atoms. Practice with new numbers
A program to try The program counts the atoms of the worked example.
Read it, then run it. Does it agree with the example?
1. Change groups = 3 to groups = 1 and "Al": 2 to "Ca": 1, for calcium carbonate. How many atoms now?
Mistakes to avoid No bracket : CaOH 2 \text{CaOH}_2 CaOH 2 is wrong; write Ca(OH) 2 \text{Ca(OH)}_2 Ca(OH) 2 . Not simplifying : Ca 2 ( CO 3 ) 2 \text{Ca}_2(\text{CO}_3)_2 Ca 2 ( CO 3 ) 2 is CaCO 3 \text{CaCO}_3 CaCO 3 . Mixing up the charges : losing electrons makes a positive ion. Calling salt a molecule : it is a pattern of ions. Check yourself What is the formula of potassium sulphate? Stuck?
