A brief note on Molecular Mass and the Mole . Read it before a test. Try each question at the end before you open its answer.
The big ideas Molecular mass (or formula unit mass) = the sum of the atomic masses in the formula, in u. One mole holds N A = 6.022 × 10 23 N_A = 6.022 \times 10^{23} N A = 6.022 × 1 0 23 particles. Molar mass in g/mol has the same number as the molecular mass in u. The map: grams ÷ M \div M ÷ M → moles × N A \times N_A × N A → particles; then times the atoms in a molecule. Share of an element = its mass in the formula ÷ the molar mass × 100 100 100 . You know You want Use mass m m m moles n = m M n = \dfrac{m}{M} n = M m moles n n n mass m = n × M m = n \times M m = n × M moles n n n particles N = n × N A N = n \times N_A N = n × N A one particle its mass M N A \dfrac{M}{N_A} N A M
A worked example How many atoms are in 11.5 g 11.5\ \text{g} 11.5 g of ethanol, C 2 H 5 OH \text{C}_2\text{H}_5\text{OH} C 2 H 5 OH ?
Molar mass. 2 × 12 g/mol + 6 × 1 g/mol + 16 g/mol = 46 g/mol 2 \times 12\ \text{g/mol} + 6 \times 1\ \text{g/mol} + 16\ \text{g/mol} = 46\ \text{g/mol} 2 × 12 g/mol + 6 × 1 g/mol + 16 g/mol = 46 g/mol . Moles. 11.5 g 46 g/mol = 0.25 mol \dfrac{11.5\ \text{g}}{46\ \text{g/mol}} = 0.25\ \text{mol} 46 g/mol 11.5 g = 0.25 mol . Atoms. Each molecule has 9 9 9 atoms: 0.25 × 9 × 6.022 × 10 23 = 1.355 × 10 24 0.25 \times 9 \times 6.022 \times 10^{23} = 1.355 \times 10^{24} 0.25 × 9 × 6.022 × 1 0 23 = 1.355 × 1 0 24 .
