A brief note on Chords, Arcs and the Angles They Make . Read it before a test. Try each question at the end before you open its answer.
Chords and the centre All radii of a circle are equal. A diameter is twice the radius, and it is the longest chord. Equal chords subtend equal angles at the centre, and chords that subtend equal angles at the centre are equal. In triangle O A B OAB O A B , ∠ O A B = ∠ O B A = 180 ∘ − ∠ A O B 2 \angle OAB = \angle OBA = \dfrac{180^\circ - \angle AOB}{2} ∠ O A B = ∠ O B A = 2 18 0 ∘ − ∠ A O B . A chord equal to the radius subtends 60 ∘ 60^\circ 6 0 ∘ at the centre. The perpendicular from the centre The perpendicular from the centre to a chord bisects the chord . The line from the centre to the middle of a chord is perpendicular to it. r 2 = d 2 + ( c 2 ) 2 r^2 = d^2 + \left(\dfrac{c}{2}\right)^2 r 2 = d 2 + ( 2 c ) 2 links the radius r r r , the distance d d d and the chord c c c . Equal chords are equally far from the centre. A chord nearer the centre is longer. Angles made by an arc The angle at the centre is double the angle at any point on the remaining part of the circle. Angles in the same segment are equal. The angle in a semicircle is 90 ∘ 90^\circ 9 0 ∘ . The hypotenuse of a right triangle is a diameter of the circle through its corners. A worked example The chord A B AB A B of a circle is 24 cm 24\ \text{cm} 24 cm long and the radius is 13 cm 13\ \text{cm} 13 cm . Find the distance of A B AB A B from the centre O O O .
O M OM O M is perpendicular to A B AB A B , so M M M is the middle point and A M = 12 cm AM = 12\ \text{cm} A M = 12 cm . In the right triangle O M A OMA O M A , O M 2 = 13 2 − 12 2 = 25 OM^2 = 13^2 - 12^2 = 25 O M 2 = 1 3 2 − 1 2 2 = 25 . So O M = 5 cm OM = 5\ \text{cm} O M = 5 cm . Practice with new numbers
A program to try The program places a point P P P at several places on a circle, with A B AB A B a diameter, and measures the angle A P B APB A P B .
Run it. What is the angle APB for every point P?
1. Change b = (1, 0) to b = (0, 1). Now A A A and B B B are not the ends of a diameter. What do the angles do?
Mistakes to avoid Using the whole chord in Pythagoras. The right triangle has half the chord as a leg. Halving the wrong way. The angle at the centre is the big one, and the angle at the rim is half of it. Taking the angle in a semicircle as 180 ∘ 180^\circ 18 0 ∘ . It is 90 ∘ 90^\circ 9 0 ∘ . Thinking that a longer chord is farther from the centre. It is nearer. Check yourself A chord A B AB A B subtends 50 ∘ 50^\circ 5 0 ∘ at the centre O O O . What is ∠ O A B \angle OAB ∠ O A B ? Stuck?
