Angles made by an arc
The angle that an arc makes at the centre is double the angle it makes at any point of the remaining circle. So angles in the same segment are equal, and the angle in a semicircle is a right angle.

Two lamp posts and a walk
Two lamp posts A and B stand on the edge of a round park. You stand at a point P on the edge and look at both posts. The angle between your two lines of sight is ∠APB. If you walk along the edge, does this angle change?
An arc AB makes an angle ∠AOB at the centre O. It makes an angle ∠APB at a point P on the remaining part of the circle, that is, on the other arc.
Theorem 7. The angle that an arc of a circle makes at the centre is double the angle that it makes at any point on the remaining part of the circle.
Given. A circle with centre O, an arc AB and a point P on the major arc.
To prove.∠AOB=2∠APB.
A circle with centre O. An arc AB at the top is drawn thick in orange. The radii OA and OB are red, and the angle AOB at the centre is marked 80 degrees. Two points P and Q lie on the long arc at the bottom, and each is joined to A and to B by green lines. The angle at P and the angle at Q are both marked 40 degrees. A caption says that the angle at the centre is double the angle at the rim, and that every point P or Q on the long arc gives the same angle.
Construction. Join P to O and extend it to meet the circle at D.
Proof.
In triangle OAP, OA=OP, because they are radii. So ∠OAP=∠OPA. Call each one x.
The angle AOD is an exterior angle of triangle OAP. So ∠AOD=∠OAP+∠OPA=2x.
In triangle OBP, OB=OP. So ∠OBP=∠OPB. Call each one y.
In the same way, ∠BOD=2y.
Add the two: ∠AOB=∠AOD+∠BOD=2x+2y=2(x+y)=2∠APB.
The same rule holds when the arc is a major arc. The angle at the centre is then more than 180∘, and it is still double the angle at the rim.
Angles in the same segment
In the simulation, the point P moves along the long arc, and the angle APB never changes. This is a theorem.
Theorem 8. Angles in the same segment of a circle are equal.
Proof. Let P and Q be two points on the same side of the chord AB, on the major arc.
By Theorem 7, ∠APB is half of ∠AOB.
By Theorem 7 again, ∠AQB is also half of ∠AOB.
So ∠APB=∠AQB.
This answers the question about the lamp posts. As you walk along the long arc of the park, the angle between the lines of sight stays the same.
The angle in a semicircle
Theorem 9. The angle in a semicircle is a right angle.
Proof. Let AB be a diameter and P a point on the circle.
The arc AB is a semicircle, and the angle at the centre is ∠AOB=180∘, because A, O and B lie on a straight line.
By Theorem 7, ∠APB=2180∘=90∘.
The converse is also true. Suppose a triangle has a right angle at B. Then the hypotenuse AC is a diameter of the circle through the three corners. The angle at the rim is 90∘, so by Theorem 7 the angle at the centre is 180∘. That means A, O and C lie on one line, and the centre is the middle point of the hypotenuse.
Worked examples
Example 1. An arc AB makes an angle ∠APB=35∘ at a point P on the major arc. Find ∠AOB and ∠OAB.
The centre.∠AOB=2×35∘=70∘.
The triangle.OA=OB, so ∠OAB=2180∘−70∘=55∘.
Example 2.AB is a diameter of a circle and P is a point on the circle. If ∠PAB=32∘, find ∠PBA.
The right angle.∠APB=90∘, because it is the angle in a semicircle.
The angle sum.∠PBA=180∘−90∘−32∘=58∘.
Example 3. A right triangle has sides 5cm and 12cm around the right angle. Find the radius of the circle through its three corners.
The hypotenuse.52+122=13cm.
The diameter. The hypotenuse is a diameter, so the radius is 6.5cm.
Practise with new numbers
Try it in Python
This program fixes an arc AB on a circle, then places five points on the long arc, and measures the angle at each one.
Common mistakes
Halving the wrong way. The angle at the centre is the big one. The angle at the rim is half of it.
Using the rule for a point on the same arc. The point P must lie on the remaining part of the circle, not on the arc AB itself.
Taking the angle in a semicircle as 180∘. The angle at the centre is 180∘, and the angle at the rim is 90∘.
Forgetting the isosceles triangle. After finding the angle at the centre, use OA=OB to find the other two angles.
Remember these
The angle at the centre is double the angle at any point on the remaining part of the circle.
Angles in the same segment are equal.
The angle in a semicircle is a right angle.
A right triangle has its hypotenuse as the diameter of the circle through its corners.
