Ecology and Environment › Ecosystems and Food ChainsEcology and Environment › Pollution and ConservationChapter 8Our Environment
Grass feeds the deer, the deer feeds the tiger, and fungi return them all to the soil. Living things and their surroundings form ecosystems, where energy flows and materials go round. In this chapter you follow food chains and webs, see why only a tenth of the energy passes up each level, and learn how harmful chemicals build up along a chain. Then you look at our own impact: the ozone layer and the waste we throw away. Python follows the energy up a food chain for you.

Ecosystems and Food Chains
What an ecosystem is, its living and non-living parts, producers, consumers and decomposers, food chains and webs, trophic levels, the ten per cent law and biological magnification.
Our Impact on the Environment
How human activities change the environment: the ozone layer and its depletion, biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste, and how we can manage our garbage.
