You sit in a moving train. Are you moving, or are you resting? It depends on who is asking. In this course we learn to say exactly where something is, how far it has gone and how fast. We practise on walks, runs and bus rides.

Motion is always measured against something, which is called the reference point. An object is at rest if its position does not change compared to the reference point, and in motion if it does. The same object can be at rest compared to one thing and moving compared to another.
Distance is the length of the path you took. It has a size only and never decreases. Displacement is how far you are from the start, in a straight line, and in which direction. For a walk with turns, the displacement is shorter than the distance; for a round trip it is zero.
Speed tells us how fast something moves. Velocity tells us how fast, and in which direction.
