Angular momentum and its conservation
Angular momentum is L=r×p

Momentum for turning
A particle of momentum p at r from a point O has angular momentum
L=r×p,L=mvr⊥
For a body turning about a fixed axis, adding up all its particles gives
L=Iω
in kg m2/s.
Torque changes angular momentum
Just as force is the rate of change of momentum, torque is the rate of change of angular momentum:
τext=dtdL
Conservation
With no external torque, angular momentum stays the same:
I1ω1=I2ω2
A skater who pulls her arms in makes I smaller, so ω grows.
Two pictures of a skater seen from above, with a body in the middle and a weight in each hand. On the left, the arms are stretched out, and a short blue arrow around the skater shows a slow spin. On the right, the arms are pulled in, and a long blue arrow shows a fast spin.
You should find the spin rate rising in proportion as I falls, and the kinetic energy rising too.
Watch out. Kinetic energy is not conserved here. K=2IL2 grows as I shrinks. The skater's muscles do work pulling her arms in against their tendency to fly out.
A worked example
A merry-go-round with I=200kg m2 turns at 1.5rad/s. A 40kg child, running toward its centre, jumps on and stays at its rim, 2.0m from the axis.
Before.L=200kg m2×1.5rad/s=300kg m2/s (the child brings none, running toward the axis).
After.I=200kg m2+40kg×(2.0m)2=360kg m2.
New spin.ω=360kg m2300kg m2/s=0.833rad/s.
Think first. Check that no external torque acts about the axis. Then write L before and after, and set them equal.
Practise with new numbers
Try it in Python
The program follows a skater as she pulls her arms in, step by step.
Remember these
Particle: L=r×p; body on a fixed axis: L=Iω.
τext=dtdL.
No external torque: I1ω1=I2ω2, while K=2IL2 changes.
Check yourself
Try each one on your own first. If you are stuck, open a hint. Then check with Show the answer.
A wheel with I=0.60kg m2 spins at 25rad/s. What is its angular momentum?
A diver halves her moment of inertia in mid-air. What happens to her spin rate?
Why does a cat, falling upside down, manage to turn over without breaking the conservation of angular momentum?
A constant torque of 2.0N m acts on a wheel for 5.0s. By how much does its angular momentum change?
