The six trigonometric ratios
For an acute angle A of a right triangle, sin A is opposite over hypotenuse, cos A is adjacent over hypotenuse and tan A is opposite over adjacent. Their reciprocals are cosec A, sec A and cot A. Also tan A is sin A over cos A. A ratio depends only on the angle, not on the size of the triangle.

Three ratios of the sides
Take a right triangle ABC with the right angle at B, and look from angle A. Three sides give six fractions. The first three have names.
sinA=hypotenuseopposite=ACBC
cosA=hypotenuseadjacent=ACAB
tanA=adjacentopposite=ABBC
Say them as sine, cosine and tangent of A. Many students remember them with the words SOH CAH TOA: Sine is Opposite over Hypotenuse, and so on.
Three more: the reciprocals
Turn each fraction upside down and you get the other three ratios.

So cosecA=sinA1, secA=cosA1 and cotA=tanA1.
Divide sine by cosine and the hypotenuse cancels:
cosAsinA=AB/ACBC/AC=ABBC=tanA.
In the same way, cotA=sinAcosA.
A note on writing.sinA is one number: the sine of angle A. It is not "sin" times A. The word on its own means nothing.
A worked example
In a right triangle, the side opposite angle A is 8cm, the adjacent side is 15cm and the hypotenuse is 17cm. Write all six ratios.
The first three.sinA=178, cosA=1715, tanA=158.
The reciprocals.cosecA=817, secA=1517, cotA=815.
Check.cosAsinA=178×1517=158, which is tanA.
The size of the triangle does not matter
Draw two right triangles with the same angle A, one small and one large. They are similar, so their sides are in the same proportion. Every side of the large one is the same multiple of the small one, and that multiple cancels in each fraction.
Two right triangles with the same angle A. The small one has sides 3 cm, 4 cm and 5 cm; the large one has sides 6 cm, 8 cm and 10 cm. Under each, sin A is worked out: 3 over 5 and 6 over 10, both equal to 0.6.
So a trigonometric ratio depends only on the angle. That is why we can speak of "sin30°" without saying which triangle.
How big can a ratio be?
The hypotenuse is the longest side. So for an acute angle:
sinA and cosA are always less than1.
cosecA and secA are always greater than1.
tanA and cotA can be any positive number.
Practise with new numbers
Try it in Python
This program writes the six ratios of the 8, 15, 17 triangle as fractions and decimals. It then makes every side three times as long.
Common mistakes
Mixing up opposite and adjacent. Always name the sides from the angle in the question first.
Pairing the wrong reciprocals.cosec goes with sin, and sec goes with cos.
Writing sin without an angle.sinA is a number; "sin" alone is not.
Thinking a larger triangle has a larger sine. The ratio depends on the angle only.
Remember these
sinA=hypopp, cosA=hypadj, tanA=adjopp.
cosecA, secA and cotA are their reciprocals.
tanA=cosAsinA and cotA=sinAcosA.
A ratio depends only on the angle. For an acute angle, sinA<1 and cosA<1.
