Course 6.1Lesson 3 of 3
To plot x, y, start at the origin, move x units along the x-axis and then y units up or down, and mark the point. To read a point, look straight down or up to the x-axis and straight across to the y-axis. The reflection of a point in the x-axis changes the sign of y, in the y-axis changes the sign of x, and in the origin changes both. On a line parallel to an axis, the length is the difference of the coordinates taken as positive. Shapes can be drawn from their corners, and the fourth corner of a parallelogram ABCD is A plus C minus B.

To plot :
To plot , go units left, then units up. You are in quadrant II, as the signs said.
When you plot several points, it is useful to use graph paper, and to choose a scale such as one square for one unit, or one square for ten units. Label the axes.
To read a point, do the reverse. Look straight down (or up) to the x-axis: that number is . Look straight across to the y-axis: that number is .
Plot the points , , and , and join them in order. You get a rectangle. Now join , and , and you have a roof on it: a house. Many pictures on a computer screen are made in the same way, from the coordinates of the corners.
A reflection is the mirror image of a point.
| Reflected in | The rule | Example for |
|---|---|---|
| the x-axis | ||
| the y-axis | ||
| the origin |
Think of it this way. Reflecting in the x-axis flips the point up or down, so only changes sign. Reflecting in the y-axis flips it left or right, so only changes sign. Reflecting in the origin does both.
A reflection keeps the distance from the mirror. The point is units above the x-axis, and its mirror image is units below it.
Move the blue point into another quadrant. Its three images always fill the other three quadrants, one each.
If two points have the same (they are on a horizontal line), the distance between them is the difference of the values, taken as a positive number: . For and it is units.
If two points have the same (a vertical line), the distance is .
Three corners of a rectangle are , and . The sides of a rectangle are parallel to the axes here, so the fourth corner has the of the first and the of the third: . The length is units and the width is units, so the area is square units.
For a parallelogram , the fourth corner is , corner by corner. This is because the diagonals of a parallelogram cut each other in half, so .
Example. Three corners of a parallelogram are , and . Then .
Check. The step from to is . The step from to is . The same step, so and are parallel and equal. ✓
This program reflects a point in the x-axis, the y-axis and the origin.
