Cross-multiplication and reducible equations
Cross-multiplication solves a pair in one step from its six coefficients. Some pairs are not linear in x and y, but become linear in 1 over x and 1 over y. A change of letters turns them into pairs we can solve.

A formula for every pair
Solve the general pair
a1x+b1y+c1=0,a2x+b2y+c2=0
by elimination once, and the answer is a formula that works for every pair. Multiply the first equation by b2 and the second by b1:
Subtract the second from the first. The terms in y cancel, and (a1b2−a2b1)x=b1c2−b2c1. The same steps for y give the other result. Written together:
b1c2−b2c1x=c1a2−c2a1y=a1b2−a2b11.
This is the cross-multiplication method. It works whenever the number under the 1 is not zero.
How to use it
Write both equations as ax+by+c=0, with everything on the left.
Read the six numbersa1,b1,c1 and a2,b2,c2, each with its sign.
Work out three numbers:X=b1c2−b2c1, Y=c1a2−c2a1 and D=a1b2−a2b1.
Divide:x=DX and y=DY. If D=0, the formula cannot be used.
Check the answer in both equations.
Three small two-by-two grids side by side, headed for x, for y and for 1. The first grid holds b1 and c1 on the top row and b2 and c2 on the bottom row, with a blue arrow from top left to bottom right and a red arrow from top right to bottom left, and the label X equals b1 c2 minus b2 c1. The second grid holds c1, a1, c2, a2 and the label Y equals c1 a2 minus c2 a1. The third grid holds a1, b1, a2, b2 and the label D equals a1 b2 minus a2 b1. Under the grids: x over X equals y over Y equals 1 over D, so x is X over D and y is Y over D.
Each of the three numbers is one diagonal of a small square of coefficients, minus the other diagonal. The squares are b and c for x, then c and a for y, then a and b for the number under 1.
A worked example
Solve 5x+2y=26 and 3x−y=9.
Write them as ax+by+c=0:5x+2y−26=0 and 3x−y−9=0.
Read the numbers.a1=5, b1=2, c1=−26, and a2=3, b2=−1, c2=−9.
Work out the three numbers.X=2(−9)−(−1)(−26)=−18−26=−44. Y=(−26)(3)−(−9)(5)=−78+45=−33. D=5(−1)−3(2)=−11.
Divide.x=−11−44=4 and y=−11−33=3.
Check.5×4+2×3=26 and 3×4−3=9.
The signs are the usual trouble. The constant c is the negative of the number on the right of the equals sign.
Equations that become linear
Look at x2+y3=13. It is not linear in x and y, because they are in denominators. But it is linear in x1 and y1. So let u=x1 and v=y1.
Solve x2+y3=13 and x5−y4=−2.
Change letters. The pair becomes 2u+3v=13 and 5u−4v=−2.
Solve the new pair. Multiply the first by 4 and the second by 3: 8u+12v=52 and 15u−12v=−6. Add them: 23u=46, so u=2. Then 2×2+3v=13 gives v=3.
Go back to x and y.x=u1=21 and y=v1=31.
Check.1/22+1/33=4+9=13 and 1/25−1/34=10−12=−2.
Here x and y cannot be 0, because we divide by them.
A sum and a difference in the denominators
Solve x+y10+x−y2=4 and x+y15−x−y5=−2.
Let u=x+y1 and v=x−y1. The pair becomes 10u+2v=4 and 15u−5v=−2. Multiply the first by 5 and the second by 2, and add:
50u+10v=20,30u−10v=−4,so80u=16andu=51.
Then 2+2v=4 gives v=1. So x+y=5 and x−y=1. Adding these gives x=3, and y=2.
Practise with new numbers
Try it in Python
The program works out X, Y and D for the worked pair, and then solves the reducible pair by changing letters.
Common mistakes
Using c with the wrong sign. For 3x+4y=10, the constant is c=−10, not 10.
Mixing up the order in X. It is b1c2−b2c1, the product down the main diagonal first.
Stopping at u and v. A reducible pair asks for x and y, so take reciprocals at the end.
Dividing by zero. If D=0, the lines are parallel or the same line, and there is no single solution.
Remember these
Write the pair as ax+by+c=0, then x=DX and y=DY.
X=b1c2−b2c1, Y=c1a2−c2a1 and D=a1b2−a2b1.
For a pair in x1 and y1, let u=x1 and v=y1, solve, and change back.
