Course 3.1Lesson 1 of 3
A polynomial in one variable x is a sum of terms, each a constant coefficient times a whole number power of x. The highest power with a non-zero coefficient is the degree, and polynomials of degree 0, 1, 2 and 3 are called constant, linear, quadratic and cubic. Powers such as x to the half or x to the minus one are not allowed. Monomials, binomials and trinomials have one, two and three terms. The value of a polynomial at a number is found by putting that number for x. The sum, difference and product of polynomials are polynomials, and the degree of a product is the sum of the degrees.

Look at these expressions: , , . Each is a sum of terms. Each term is a number times a power of a variable. These are examples of polynomials.
Polynomials are everywhere. The area of a square of side is . The area of a rectangle with sides and is . The height of a ball thrown up is a polynomial in the time. Engineers use polynomials to draw smooth curves, and computers use them to calculate other functions. So it is worth knowing them well.
A polynomial in one variable has the form
where is a whole number and the numbers are constants. The constants are the coefficients of the terms. The last one, , is the constant term.
Example: in , the coefficient of is , of is , of is , and the constant term is . The sign belongs to the term, so the coefficient of is and not .
The power of must be a whole number.
A good rule is: the variable never appears under a root sign, and never in a denominator.
The degree of a polynomial in one variable is the highest power of the variable that has a non-zero coefficient.
| Polynomial | Degree | Name by degree |
|---|---|---|
| 0 | constant | |
| 1 | linear | |
| 2 | quadratic | |
| 3 | cubic |
Look at . The highest power is not written first. The degree is . It is a good habit to write a polynomial in standard form, with the powers going down: .
A polynomial with one term is a monomial. With two terms, it is a binomial. With three, it is a trinomial. For example is a linear binomial, and is a quadratic trinomial.
The number is the zero polynomial. It has no degree. A non-zero constant such as has degree , because .
Set . The curve turns into a parabola, and the degree drops to . Set as well, and it becomes a straight line.
We often write a polynomial as . The symbol means the value of the polynomial when . For :
The sum and the difference of two polynomials are polynomials. We add the terms with the same power.
The product of two polynomials is also a polynomial. We multiply each term by each term.
The degree of a product is the sum of the degrees: . The degree of a sum is at most the larger degree. It can be smaller: , where the terms cancel.
This program stores a polynomial as a list of coefficients, and it finds its degree and some values.
