Course 7.1Lesson 1 of 3
A linear equation in two variables has the form ax plus by plus c equals 0, where a and b are not both zero, and both variables have the power 1. A solution is a pair x, y that makes the equation true. Such an equation has infinitely many solutions: choose a value of x, and y is decided. We can check whether a pair is a solution by putting it in the equation, and we can write the equation to give y in terms of x. Equations like temperature conversion, cost of pens and notebooks and the perimeter of a rectangle are examples. In a shop problem, some solutions are not valid, for example a negative price.
Try the code and the simulations beside the lesson.
You buy 2 pens and 1 notebook. You pay 10 dollars. How much does one pen cost, and how much does the notebook cost?
We do not know either price. So we use letters. Let one pen cost dollars, and let the notebook cost dollars. The money that you paid gives an equation.
This is an equation with two variables, and . It is called linear because and both have the power 1. There is no , no and no .
Every linear equation in two variables can be written in the form
Here , and are numbers, and and are not both zero. Our equation becomes . So , and .
Some equations may look different, but are linear. becomes . The equation is also linear in two variables, because we can write it as , with .
An equation such as or is not linear.
A solution is a pair of values, one for and one for , that makes the equation true. We write it as .
Is a solution of ? We put and in the left side.
It is 10, the same as the right side. So yes, is a solution. A pen costs 3 dollars, and the notebook costs 4 dollars.
Is a solution? . This is not 10. So no.
Try . . It works. Try . . It works too.
An equation with one unknown, like , has one solution. But an equation with two unknowns has infinitely many solutions. We can choose any value for . Then is decided.
You should find that the dot never leaves the line, and the left side always equals the right side. Every place the dot stops is a solution.
We choose a value of . Then we want , so we write the equation as .
| The solution | ||
|---|---|---|
| 0 | 10 | |
| 1 | 8 | |
| 2 | 6 | |
| 3 | 4 | |
| 4 | 2 | |
| 5 | 0 |
In the shop, only some of these solutions make sense. A price cannot be negative. So , which gives , is a solution of the equation, but not of the shop problem.
The perimeter of a rectangle. A rectangle has a perimeter of . Let the sides be and . Then , or . There are many such rectangles: , , , and so on. Here and must be positive, so the solutions with do not fit the problem.
Temperature. The relation between degrees celsius and degrees fahrenheit is . This is a linear equation in two variables. A solution is , which is the freezing point of water. Another is , the boiling point.
Distance. A taxi charges 30 dollars to start and 12 dollars for each kilometre. The cost for kilometres is . When , . A solution is .
To find whether a pair is a solution, put it in the equation and compare the two sides. Do not guess. If the two sides are equal, it is a solution. If not, it is not.
This program takes from 0 to 5 and finds for the equation . It also checks every pair.
Try each one on your own first. If you are stuck, open a hint. Then check with Show the answer.
