Problems on cyclic quadrilaterals
We put the theorem, its converse and the exterior angle together. We show that a trapezium is cyclic exactly when its legs are equal, learn how to chase angles through a figure, and test coordinates and sets of angles by program.

A plan for problems
Most problems on cyclic quadrilaterals are solved in a few steps.
Find the pairs. Mark the opposite angles. Mark any exterior angle and the angle opposite to it.
Use the sum. Opposite angles add to 180∘. An exterior angle equals the interior opposite angle.
Bring in the triangles. A diagonal cuts the figure into triangles. Angles in the same part of the circle are equal, and the angles of a triangle add to 180∘.
Check. The four angles of the quadrilateral must add to 360∘.
Example 1.ABCD is a cyclic quadrilateral. The diagonal AC is drawn. ∠BAC=35∘ and ∠ACD=48∘ and ∠ABC=107∘. Find ∠ADC and ∠CAD.
∠ADC is opposite to ∠ABC. So ∠ADC=180∘−107∘=73∘.
In the triangle ACD, the angles add to 180∘. So ∠CAD=180∘−73∘−48∘=59∘.
Check. In the triangle ABC, ∠BCA=180∘−107∘−35∘=38∘. Then ∠BCD=38+48=86∘. And ∠BAD=35+59=94∘. They add to 180∘.
Trapezium, parallelogram, kite
A trapezium has one pair of parallel sides. An isosceles trapezium has equal legs.
Theorem. A trapezium is cyclic if and only if it is isosceles.
If it is isosceles, then it is cyclic. Let ABCD have AB∥DC and AD=BC. The base angles are equal: ∠A=∠B. The angles ∠A and ∠D lie between parallel lines, so they add to 180∘. Then ∠B+∠D=∠A+∠D=180∘. By the converse, ABCD is cyclic.
If it is cyclic, then it is isosceles. Now ABCD is cyclic with AB∥DC. Then ∠A+∠D=180∘ because of the parallel lines. Also ∠A+∠C=180∘ because ABCD is cyclic. So ∠C=∠D. A trapezium with equal base angles has equal legs, so AD=BC.
A trapezium whose legs are not equal is not cyclic.
Other figures:
A rectangle is always cyclic. Its diagonals are diameters.
A parallelogram is cyclic only if it is a rectangle.
A rhombus is cyclic only if it is a square.
A kite is cyclic only if its two opposite angles between unequal sides are right angles.
Practise with new numbers
Try it in Python
The program reads the corners of four shapes, measures their angles, and tests the opposite angles.
Common mistakes
Taking every trapezium to be cyclic. Only an isosceles trapezium is.
Taking every parallelogram to be cyclic. Only a rectangle is.
Finding an angle but not checking it. After you finish, add the four angles. They must make 360∘.
Mixing up the diagonal angles. Equal angles on the same arc come from corners on the same side of the chord, not from opposite sides.
Remember these
Mark opposite angles first. Then bring in the exterior angle and the triangles.
A trapezium is cyclic exactly when its legs are equal.
A cyclic parallelogram is a rectangle. A cyclic rhombus is a square.
Always add the four angles at the end. The total must be 360∘.
