Sums into products
Adding and subtracting the sum formulae turns a product such as 2sinxcosy into a sum, and back. The sum-to-product formulae, such as sinC+sinD=2sin2C+Dcos2C−D

From products to sums
Write the two sine formulae one under the other:
sin(x+y)=sinxcosy+cosxsiny
sin(x−y)=sinxcosy−cosxsiny
Add them, and the second terms cancel: 2sinxcosy=sin(x+y)+sin(x−y). Subtract them, and the first terms cancel. Doing the same with the two cosine formulae gives four rules:
2sinxcosy=sin(x+y)+sin(x−y)
2cosxsiny=sin(x+y)−sin(x−y)
2cosxcosy=cos(x+y)+cos(x−y)
2sinxsiny=cos(x−y)−cos(x+y)
Look at the last one. The difference comes in the order cos(x−y)−cos(x+y).
From sums to products
Now read the rules the other way. Put x+y=C and x−y=D. Then x=2C+D and y=2C−D:
sinC+sinD=2sin2C+Dcos2C−D
sinC−sinD=2cos2C+Dsin2C−D
cosC+cosD=2cos2C+Dcos2C−D
cosC−cosD=−2sin2C+Dsin2C−D
The pattern is easy to keep: half the sum and half the difference. Only the last formula has a minus sign in front.
Two waves, one product
When two notes of nearly the same pitch play together, you hear the sound swell and fade. These are beats. The sum of the two waves is a product: a fast wave inside a slow one.
Set p=12 and q=11. The red curves change slowly, because 2p−q is small. The blue wave swells and fades between them.
A worked example: an exact value
Find sin75∘+sin15∘ without a table.
Half the sum and half the difference.275∘+15∘=45∘ and 275∘−15∘=30∘.
The product.sin75∘+sin15∘=2sin45∘cos30∘=2⋅21⋅23.
Simplify.23=26.
A method for proving identities
Start from the side that looks more complicated.
Group two terms whose angles add or subtract to give simple halves.
Turn each pair into a product.
Look for a common factor, and cancel it.
Example. Prove that cos5x+cos3xsin5x+sin3x=tan4x.
The top.sin5x+sin3x=2sin4xcosx.
The bottom.cos5x+cos3x=2cos4xcosx.
Cancel. The factor 2cosx cancels, and cos4xsin4x=tan4x.
Practise with new numbers
Try it in Python
The program checks the formula for sinP+sinQ for three pairs of angles in degrees.
Common mistakes
Forgetting the halves.sinC+sinD=2sin2C+Dcos2C−D, not 2sin(C+D)cos(C−D).
The sign of cosC−cosD. It is −2sin2C+Dsin2C−D. Check it with C=2π and D=0: the left side is −1.
The order in 2sinxsiny. It is cos(x−y)−cos(x+y), and the result can be checked at x=y.
Grouping the wrong pairs. Pair terms whose halves give angles you can use, often a common factor.
Remember these
2sinxcosy=sin(x+y)+sin(x−y), and three more like it.
sinC±sinD and cosC±cosD become products of the half sum and the half difference.
cosC−cosD is the only one with a minus sign in front.
To prove an identity, turn pairs of sums into products, and cancel the common factor.
