What you will be able to do
write the integrals of x2±a21 and a2−x21, and of the roots of a2−x2 and x2±a2;
complete the square so that a quadratic fits a standard form;
integrate ax2+bx+cpx+q by splitting the top.
Why these forms need their own rules
Substitution does not turn x2+91 into a simple form. There is no inner function with its derivative beside it. Yet this integral comes up so often, in physics and in statistics as well as in maths, that its answer is worth remembering. The answer is an inverse tangent.
The six standard forms
Here a is a positive constant. Each result can be checked by differentiating it.
∫x2+a2dx=a1tan−1ax+C
∫x2−a2dx=2a1lnx+ax−a+C
∫a2−x2dx=2a1lna−xa+x+C
∫a2−x2dx=sin−1ax+C
∫x2+a2dx=lnx+x2+a2+C
∫x2−a2dx=lnx+x2−a2+C
The first one is the key to the others. Write x2+a2=a2(1+a2x2) and put u=ax. The second and third come from x2−a21=2a1(x−a1−x+a1), which is the idea of the next lesson.
Two graphs side by side. On the left is the blue bell-shaped curve y = 1 over (x squared plus 4), highest at the point (0, 0.25) and falling towards zero on both sides. On the right is the orange S-shaped curve y = one half of the inverse tangent of x over 2, rising from about -0.66 at the left edge to about 0.66 at the right edge. Dashed horizontal lines on the right show the two limits that it approaches, plus and minus pi over 4, which is about 0.79.
Three integrals of a square root
These also come up in exams. They are found by integration by parts, which is the third lesson.
∫a2−x2dx=2xa2−x2+2a2sin−1ax+C
∫x2+a2dx=2xx2+a2+2a2lnx+x2+a2+C
∫x2−a2dx=2xx2−a2−2a2lnx+x2−a2+C
The first one is the area of part of a circle: it contains the area of a triangle and of a circular sector.
A note on words
The inverse tangent is written tan−1 in NCERT and in many Indian books. A-Level, IB and AP texts often write arctan. The inverse sine is sin−1 or arcsin. The function ln(x+x2+a2) differs from sinh−1ax only by the constant lna. So A-Level and IB texts often write the answer as arsinhax+C.
Completing the square
When the quadratic is not in the standard form, complete the square first.
ax2+bx+c=a[(x+2ab)2+4a24ac−b2].
Then put u=x+2ab, so that du=dx. The integral now has one of the standard forms in u.
Worked examples
Example 1. Find ∫x2+6x+13dx.
Complete the square: x2+6x+13=(x+3)2+4.
Put u=x+3. The integral is ∫u2+22du=21tan−12u+C.
Return to x: 21tan−12x+3+C.
Example 2. Find ∫7−6x−x2dx.
Complete the square: 7−6x−x2=16−(x+3)2.
Put u=x+3. The integral is ∫42−u2du=sin−14u+C.
Return to x: sin−14x+3+C.
Example 3. Find ∫x2+2x+53x+1dx. The top is not the derivative of the bottom, which is 2x+2. So split it.
Write 3x+1=23(2x+2)−2. Check: 23(2x+2)=3x+3, and 3x+3−2=3x+1.
The first part has the top equal to the derivative of the bottom: 23∫x2+2x+52x+2dx=23ln(x2+2x+5).
The second part: −2∫(x+1)2+4dx=−2×21tan−12x+1.
The answer is 23ln(x2+2x+5)−tan−12x+1+C.
Practise with new numbers
Try it in Python
Each row of the program has an integrand and the answer that a special form gave. The program checks each answer by taking its slope.
Common mistakes
Putting a21 in front of the inverse tangent. The factor is a1.
Mixing up x2−a2 and a2−x2. The signs inside the logarithm swap. Check with a small number.
Skipping the square. For x2+6x+13 the standard form needs (x+3)2+4.
Ignoring a leading number. For 4x2+9, take the 4 out first: 4x2+9=4(x2+49).
Splitting the top wrongly. Always check: the new top, multiplied out, must equal the old top.
Remember these
∫x2+a2dx=a1tan−1ax and ∫a2−x2dx=sin−1ax.
∫x2−a2dx=2a1lnx+ax−a, and the roots of x2±a2 give logarithms.
Complete the square, then put u=x+2ab.
For ax2+bx+cpx+q, write px+q=A(2ax+b)+B. The first part gives a logarithm, and the second part gives one of the standard forms.
