How acidic is lemon juice? How basic is soap? The pH scale gives a number. In this course we learn the scale, we see why it matters for the stomach, the teeth, the soil and insect stings, and we calculate how much acid neutralises a base.

The pH scale runs from 0 to 14. It measures how many hydrogen ions a solution has. A pH below 7 is acidic, 7 is neutral and above 7 is basic. A change of one unit in pH is a tenfold change in the concentration of hydrogen ions.
Blood has a pH of about 7.4, and the stomach makes hydrochloric acid of pH about 1.5 to help digestion. Too much stomach acid causes indigestion, and an antacid, which is a mild base such as magnesium hydroxide, neutralises it. Tooth enamel dissolves below pH 5.5 when bacteria make acid from sugar, and basic toothpaste helps. A bee sting has acid, so a mild base gives relief, while a wasp sting is basic and vinegar helps. Farmers add lime to acidic soil. Rain is naturally about pH 5.6, and below that it is acid rain.
In neutralisation, the moles of H+ equal the moles of OH-. For an acid and a base that react one to one, the volume needed is found from the concentrations and the volume of the other. In a titration, the pH rises sharply near the point of neutralisation.
