Salt is taken from the sea, oxygen from the air, and petrol from crude oil. Every one of them is a mixture that must be separated. Here we learn the main methods, and we choose the right one from the properties of the parts.

We separate the parts of a mixture by physical means that use a difference in a property. Evaporation, filtration, centrifugation and a separating funnel are four simple methods.
Chromatography separates parts that move at different speeds on paper, and the Rf value identifies each part. Crystallisation makes a pure solid from a solution as the solution cools.
Distillation separates liquids by their boiling points. Simple distillation works when the boiling points differ by more than 25 K. Fractional distillation is used when they are closer, as in the separation of air or crude oil.
