Some reactions make a mixture hot, and some make it cold. Iron left in the rain turns to rust. In this course we look at the energy in reactions, at rusting and rancidity in daily life, and at how to find the mass of a product.

An exothermic reaction gives out heat and the surroundings get warmer. An endothermic reaction takes in heat and the surroundings get cooler. We can find the heat from the rise in temperature of water.
Corrosion is the slow eating away of a metal by air, water or chemicals. Iron rusts when it is in contact with both oxygen and water. Rancidity is the oxidation of fats and oils, which makes food smell and taste bad. Both can be prevented.
The coefficients of a balanced equation give the ratio of moles of the reactants and products. To find a mass, write the balanced equation and change the given mass to moles. Use the ratio of the coefficients to get the moles wanted, then change them back to a mass. In every reaction, the total mass of the reactants equals the total mass of the products. When one reactant runs out first, it is the limiting reactant, and it decides how much product is made.
