Beyond the textbook. How to choose the reagent that changes one group and leaves another alone. The named reactions of the carbonyl group, with their scope and their limits. How to plan a multi-step conversion, or name an unknown compound from its tests. It is at the level of JEE Advanced, A-Level Chemistry and IB Higher Level, with a full timed paper.

Real molecules have more than one group. A chemist often has to change one of them and leave the others alone. This lesson gives the ladder of carbonyl reactivity and the reducing agents that choose between groups. It shows what a Grignard reagent does with each carbonyl compound. Then it hides a group with an acetal while another reacts.
Fifteen reactions of the carbonyl group carry names. This lesson gives each one in a line: what goes in, what comes out and what limits it. It also tracks the number of carbon atoms, which is the best way to remember them. Three of them are new: the Perkin reaction, the benzoin condensation and the haloform reaction in full.
A multi-step conversion is a puzzle with rules. Count the carbons, find the groups, and work backwards. An unknown compound is a puzzle too: the formula and the tests narrow it to one structure. This lesson gives a method for both, and a Python route finder that does the search for you.
