Health means being well enough to work well physically, mentally and socially. It is more than having no disease. It depends on the person and also on the community: clean water, clean surroundings, enough food, work and a peaceful society. Personal health and community health go together.
A disease is a failure of some part of the body to work well. It shows itself in symptoms and signs. An acute disease lasts a short time, like a common cold. A chronic disease lasts a long time, even for life, like tuberculosis or elephantiasis, and harms health much more.
Most diseases have many causes. The immediate cause is what directly brings on the disease, usually a microbe. Contributory causes, such as poor food, unclean surroundings, harmful habits or inherited traits, make it easier for the disease to take hold. Diseases are infectious when microbes spread them, and non-infectious when they have internal causes.
