Animal husbandry is the scientific management of livestock: feeding, breeding and disease control. Cattle are kept as milch animals for milk and as draught animals for farm work. Crossing exotic breeds, which give a long lactation, with local breeds, which resist disease, raises the milk yield.
Poultry are birds kept for eggs (layers) and for meat (broilers). Crossing Indian breeds with foreign breeds improves them. Fish come from the sea and from fresh water, by capture and by culture. In composite fish culture, five kinds of fish that feed at different levels share one pond.
Bee-keeping, or apiculture, is the rearing of honeybees for honey and wax. Four kinds of honeybee live in India. The Italian bee gives much honey and stings little. The quality of honey depends on the pasturage, the flowers that the bees visit.
