Course 2.3Lesson 1 of 3
Kingdom Plantae holds the eukaryotic organisms with chlorophyll: algae, bryophytes, pteridophytes, gymnosperms and angiosperms. Their cell wall is of cellulose, they are mostly autotrophic, and their life cycle has a diploid sporophyte and a haploid gametophyte (alternation of generations). Kingdom Animalia holds the multicellular heterotrophic eukaryotes with no cell wall, with holozoic nutrition, and mostly sexual reproduction.
Try the code and the simulations beside the lesson.
You know the plants and the animals better than any other organisms. In the five kingdoms they are two of five. Here we state the features that put an organism in each.
Plantae holds all the eukaryotic organisms that have chlorophyll: the algae, the bryophytes (mosses), the pteridophytes (ferns), the gymnosperms and the angiosperms. We study each group in the next chapter.
You should find that the number halves at meiosis, when the sporophyte makes spores, and doubles again at fertilisation, when two gametes make a zygote.
Animalia holds the heterotrophic eukaryotes that are multicellular.
| Feature | Plantae | Animalia |
|---|---|---|
| Cell | eukaryotic | eukaryotic |
| Cell wall | of cellulose | none |
| Food | made by photosynthesis | taken in from others (holozoic) |
| Reserve food | starch | glycogen or fat |
| Body | tissues and organs | tissues, organs and organ systems |
| Movement from place to place | not in most | in most |
| Life cycle | alternation of generations | no alternation of generations |
This program puts the two kingdoms side by side, and finds where they agree and where they differ.
Try each one on your own first. If you are stuck, open a hint. Then check with Show the answer.
