Try it on paper first. A hint, the key idea and the worked solution are here when you need them.
Write the molecular formula of the alkene and of the alkyne that each have carbon atoms. Give their names. How many more hydrogen atoms does the alkane with nine carbons have than the alkyne?
Alkenes have one C=C, , -ene. Alkynes have one C≡C, , -yne. A ring also takes away two hydrogens: cyclohexane is and saturated. Compare the hydrogens with to tell the type.
Have you tried it?
Work it out on paper first. It is fine to get stuck or make a mistake: that is how we learn. When you are ready, go through the solution one step at a time, and check each step against your own.
Step 1. Alkene. : , nonene.
Step 2. Alkyne. : , nonyne.
Step 3. Alkane. has more hydrogens than the alkyne.
Answer: nonene and nonyne ; the alkane has more hydrogens.
