The stem of hydrilla, a plant that lives under water, has large air spaces. Name this tissue, and say why it helps the plant.
Need a reminder? The key ideaShow
Parenchyma: alive, thin walls, stores food. Collenchyma: alive, thick at the corners, flexible. Sclerenchyma: dead, lignin, hard. Epidermis protects and has stomata; cork is dead and waterproof.
The worked solution
Have you tried it?
Work it out on paper first. It is fine to get stuck or make a mistake: that is how we learn. When you are ready, compare your working with the solution.
Step 1. The tissue. Aerenchyma, a parenchyma with large air spaces.
Step 2. Why it helps. The air makes the plant light, so it floats up towards the light. The air spaces also carry gases through the plant under water.
