Try it on paper first. A hint, the key idea and the worked solution are here when you need them.
From this list, choose the substances that change straight from a solid to a gas when they are warmed: camphor, candle wax, iodine, chocolate, dry ice, sugar, naphthalene, ammonium chloride. For each of the others, say what it does instead.
Sublimation is the change of a solid straight into a gas: camphor, naphthalene, iodine, ammonium chloride and dry ice sublime. The reverse is deposition. Heating a mixture can separate a substance that sublimes from one that does not.
Have you tried it?
Work it out on paper first. It is fine to get stuck or make a mistake: that is how we learn. When you are ready, go through the solution one step at a time, and check each step against your own.
Step 1. They sublime. Camphor, iodine (a purple vapour), dry ice (solid carbon dioxide), naphthalene (moth balls) and ammonium chloride.
Step 2. The others. Candle wax and chocolate melt into a liquid first. Sugar melts and then breaks down into a brown caramel.
Answer: camphor, iodine, dry ice, naphthalene and ammonium chloride sublime.
