Which kind of mirror, concave or convex, is used in each place? Give one reason each time.
- A dentist's mirror. (b) A car headlight. (c) The side mirror of a car. (d) A mirror above the corner of a shop.
Need a reminder? The key ideaShow
Concave mirror, object beyond : a smaller real inverted image between and . Object at : the same size, at . Object between and : a larger real image beyond . Object inside : a larger virtual upright image behind the mirror. A convex mirror always gives a smaller, virtual, upright image between and .
The worked solution
Have you tried it?
Work it out on paper first. It is fine to get stuck or make a mistake: that is how we learn. When you are ready, go through the solution one step at a time, and check each step against your own.
Step 1. (a) Dentist: concave. The tooth is inside the focus, so the mirror gives a larger, upright image.
Step 2. (b) Headlight: concave. The lamp is at the focus, so the light leaves as a parallel beam that goes far.
Step 3. (c) Side mirror: convex. It shows a wide view of the road, upright.
Step 4. (d) Shop corner: convex. The same wide view lets the shopkeeper see the whole floor.
Answer: (a) concave, (b) concave, (c) convex, (d) convex.
