Name the meristem mainly responsible for each.
- A bamboo shoot grows longer at its tip.
- The trunk of a mango tree grows wider each year.
- Grass grows back from its base after it is cut.
Need a reminder? The key ideaShow
Meristems are where plant cells divide: apical at the tips (length), lateral or cambium at the sides (thickness), intercalary at the base of leaves. Each division doubles the cells: after divisions.
The worked solution
Have you tried it?
Work it out on paper first. It is fine to get stuck or make a mistake: that is how we learn. When you are ready, go through the solution one step at a time, and check each step against your own.
(a) The apical meristem, at the tip.
(b) The lateral meristem, the cambium.
(c) The intercalary meristem, at the base of the leaves.
