Try it on paper first. A hint, the key idea and the worked solution are here when you need them.
Two metals A and B give parallel lines on a graph of stopping potential against frequency. Metal A has a threshold frequency of Hz. The work function of B is eV larger than that of A. Light of frequency Hz falls on each. Use V s. Find (a) the stopping potential for A, (b) the stopping potential for B and (c) the frequency at which B would give the stopping potential that A gives at Hz.
A photon has energy , with eV nm. Einstein's equation is . So , a straight line of slope V s. A beam of power sends photons each second.
Have you tried it?
Work it out on paper first. It is fine to get stuck or make a mistake: that is how we learn. When you are ready, go through the solution one step at a time, and check each step against your own.
Plan. The lines are parallel, so they have the same slope . Only the work functions differ.
Step 1. Metal A. .
Step 2. The work functions. eV. So eV.
Step 3. Metal B. The photon energy is eV. So V.
Step 4. The matching frequency. B needs eV more photon energy than A. The extra frequency is Hz. So Hz.
Answer: V; V; Hz.
Check. B has a threshold of Hz. The light is only just above it, so is tiny.
