Try it on paper first. A hint, the key idea and the worked solution are here when you need them.
A ball is thrown straight up at 15 m/s from the edge of a cliff that is 25 m above the sea. Its height above the sea is . Write the bisection method, and use it to find when the ball hits the sea. Check the answer with the quadratic formula.
Have you tried it?
Work it out on paper first. It is fine to get stuck or make a mistake: that is how we learn. When you are ready, go through the solution one step at a time, and check each step against your own.
Plan. At the height is 25, positive. At the height is , negative. So is a bracket. Then halve the interval until it is narrow.
Check. The quadratic formula gives s. The two answers agree. (The other root of the quadratic is negative, which is before the throw, and is not the answer.)
Answer: the ball hits the sea after 4.259 s.
