Try it on paper first. A hint, the key idea and the worked solution are here when you need them.
The visible surface of the Sun is at about K. (a) Find the average translational kinetic energy of a hydrogen atom there, in joules and in electronvolts. Take J. (b) At what temperature would the average kinetic energy be eV?
Temperature measures the average kinetic energy of the molecules:
with J/K, J/(mol K) and in kelvin.
Have you tried it?
Work it out on paper first. It is fine to get stuck or make a mistake: that is how we learn. When you are ready, go through the solution one step at a time, and check each step against your own.
Step 1. The energy. J.
Step 2. In eV. eV.
Step 3. The temperature for 1.0 eV. We want , so K.
Answer: J, or eV; about K.
Check. The answer to (b) is a little above K, as it should be, since eV is a little more than eV.
