Try it on paper first. A hint, the key idea and the worked solution are here when you need them.
The top edge of a garden wall is a curve. At a distance of metres from the left end, the wall is metres high, for . A painter wants to know the area of the face of the wall. First estimate it with four strips of width metre, using the height at the left end of each strip. Then find the exact area with an integral, and find how far the estimate is below it.
Cut the region under into strips of width . The sum of the strips tends to the area as grows, and the area is for an antiderivative .
Have you tried it?
Work it out on paper first. It is fine to get stuck or make a mistake: that is how we learn. When you are ready, go through the solution one step at a time, and check each step against your own.
Step 1. The strips. The heights at are , , and metres. Each strip has width metre, so the estimate is square metres.
Step 2. The integral. square metres.
Step 3. The gap. square metres.
Answer: the estimate is square metres, the exact area is about square metres, and the gap is about square metres. The estimate is low because the wall rises to the right.
