Show that √5 is irrational. Why does the same argument fail for √9?

StemPy LabContributed by StemPy Lab

Try it on paper first. A hint, the key idea and the worked solution are here when you need them.

Show that 5\sqrt{5}5 is irrational. Why does the same argument fail for 9\sqrt{9}9?

Need a reminder? The key ideaShowHide

An irrational number cannot be written as pq\dfrac{p}{q}qp. Its decimal never ends and never repeats. n\sqrt{n}n is irrational when the whole number nnn is not a perfect square. Rational and irrational numbers together make the real numbers.

The worked solution

Have you tried it?

Work it out on paper first. It is fine to get stuck or make a mistake: that is how we learn. When you are ready, go through the solution one step at a time, and check each step against your own.

Step 1. Suppose. 5=pq\sqrt{5} = \dfrac{p}{q}5=qp, with ppp and qqq sharing no factor. Then p2=5q2p^2 = 5q^2p2=5q2.

Step 2. ppp. 555 divides p2p^2p2, and 555 is prime, so 555 divides ppp. Write p=5kp = 5kp=5k.

Step 3. qqq. Then 25k2=5q225k^2 = 5q^225k2=5q2, so q2=5k2q^2 = 5k^2q2=5k2, and 555 divides qqq as well.

Step 4. Contradiction. ppp and qqq share the factor 555, against what we assumed. So 5\sqrt{5}5 is irrational.

Step 5. Why not 9\sqrt{9}9? p2=9q2p^2 = 9q^2p2=9q2 only tells us 333 divides ppp; there is no contradiction, since 9=31\sqrt{9} = \dfrac{3}{1}9=13 really is a fraction.

Answer: 5\sqrt{5}5 is irrational; for 9\sqrt{9}9 the assumption is simply true.
