Try it on paper first. A hint, the key idea and the worked solution are here when you need them.
The second hand of a wall clock is long. Light falls on it from the side, so the shadow of its tip moves up and down a straight line on the wall. At the shadow is at its highest point. Find the angular frequency of the shadow's motion and its position later. How long does the shadow take to go from the centre of its path to from the centre?
In simple harmonic motion : is the amplitude, the phase, the phase constant, and . It is the projection, on a diameter, of a point moving round a circle of radius at the steady angular speed .
Have you tried it?
Work it out on paper first. It is fine to get stuck or make a mistake: that is how we learn. When you are ready, go through the solution one step at a time, and check each step against your own.
Step 1. SHM. The shadow is the projection of uniform circular motion, so it moves in SHM with and . Then .
Step 2. After 10 s. It starts at the top, so . The phase is . So .
Step 3. Centre to 6 cm. From the centre, . We want when . So , which is a twelfth of a turn: .
Answer: , above the centre, and .
Check. The shadow takes from the top to , but only from the centre to . Both cover . The shadow is slow near the top and fast near the centre.
