The same metre rule, 1.00 m long, can hang from a hole drilled anywhere along it…

StemPy LabContributed by StemPy Lab

Try it on paper first. A hint, the key idea and the worked solution are here when you need them.

The same metre rule, 1.00 m1.00\ \text{m}1.00 m long, can hang from a hole drilled anywhere along it. Let the hole be a distance ddd from the middle. (a) Show that T=2πL2/12+d2gdT = 2\pi\sqrt{\dfrac{L^2/12 + d^2}{gd}}T=2πgdL2/12+d2. (b) For which ddd is the period shortest? (c) What is that shortest period?

Check your answer

Work it out on paper, then type your number. The answer itself stays hidden.

Pull back in proportion to displacement gives SHM. U-tube with a liquid column of length LLL: T=2πL/2gT = 2\pi\sqrt{L/2g}T=2πL/2g. Floating body with depth hhh under the surface: T=2πh/gT = 2\pi\sqrt{h/g}T=2πh/g. A body about a pivot, centre of mass ddd from it:

T=2πImgd\displaystyle T = 2\pi\sqrt{\frac{I}{mgd}}T=2πmgdI

The worked solution

Have you tried it?

Work it out on paper first. It is fine to get stuck or make a mistake: that is how we learn. When you are ready, go through the solution one step at a time, and check each step against your own.

(a) About the middle, Ic=112mL2I_c = \tfrac{1}{12}mL^2Ic=121mL2. The parallel axis rule gives I=112mL2+md2I = \tfrac{1}{12}mL^2 + md^2I=121mL2+md2 about the hole. Put it in T=2πI/mgdT = 2\pi\sqrt{I/mgd}T=2πI/mgd, and mmm cancels.

(b) TTT is smallest when L2/12d+d\dfrac{L^2/12}{d} + ddL2/12+d is smallest. That happens when the two parts are equal: d2=L212d^2 = \dfrac{L^2}{12}d2=12L2, so d=L12=1.00 m3.46=0.289 md = \dfrac{L}{\sqrt{12}} = \dfrac{1.00\ \text{m}}{3.46} = 0.289\ \text{m}d=12L=3.461.00 m=0.289 m.

(c) Then L2/12+d2d=2d=0.577 m\dfrac{L^2/12 + d^2}{d} = 2d = 0.577\ \text{m}dL2/12+d2=2d=0.577 m, and T=2π0.577 m9.8 m/s2=1.53 sT = 2\pi\sqrt{\dfrac{0.577\ \text{m}}{9.8\ \text{m/s}^2}} = 1.53\ \text{s}T=2π9.8 m/s20.577 m=1.53 s.

Check. With the hole at the end, T=1.64 sT = 1.64\ \text{s}T=1.64 s. So the best hole saves about 0.11 s0.11\ \text{s}0.11 s.
