Try it on paper first. A hint, the key idea and the worked solution are here when you need them.
Here are some densities: water , petrol , cork , teak wood , rubber , glass and gold .
, in (and ). A thing floats on a liquid if its density is less than the liquid's. Squeezing a gas into less space makes it denser.
Have you tried it?
Work it out on paper first. It is fine to get stuck or make a mistake: that is how we learn. When you are ready, go through the solution one step at a time, and check each step against your own.
Step 1. (a) On water, . Cork () and teak () are less dense, so they float. Rubber (), glass () and gold () are denser, so they sink.
Step 2. (b) On petrol, . Cork () and teak () are still less dense, so both float on petrol too. The others sink.
Answer: (a) Cork and teak float; rubber, glass and gold sink. (b) Cork and teak.
Check. A solid that floats on petrol must also float on water, because water is denser than petrol.
