A museum notice says: "Systematics is just another word for taxonomy." What does the word systematics come from, and which book of Linnaeus used it? Correct the notice.
Need a reminder? The key ideaShow
The four basic processes of taxonomy are characterisation, identification, classification and nomenclature. Classification groups organisms by easily observable characters. Systematics, from the Latin systema, also takes the evolutionary relationships between organisms into account.
The worked solution
Have you tried it?
Work it out on paper first. It is fine to get stuck or make a mistake: that is how we learn. When you are ready, go through the solution one step at a time, and check each step against your own.
Step 1. The word. Systematics comes from the Latin systema, a systematic arrangement of organisms.
Step 2. Linnaeus. He used Systema Naturae as the title of his book.
Step 3. The difference. Taxonomy covers characterisation, identification, classification and nomenclature. Systematics includes these and also the evolutionary relationships between organisms.
Answer: the notice should say that systematics includes taxonomy and also studies how organisms are related by evolution.
