Try it on paper first. A hint, the key idea and the worked solution are here when you need them.
Prove that if is a multiple of , then is a multiple of . Do not use the key fact about primes. Use a proof by contradiction, with the two possible remainders of when it is divided by .
In a proof by contradiction we suppose that the statement is false, reason correctly, and reach something impossible. Then the statement must be true. Examples alone are not a proof, but one counterexample shows that a statement is false.
Have you tried it?
Work it out on paper first. It is fine to get stuck or make a mistake: that is how we learn. When you are ready, go through the solution one step at a time, and check each step against your own.
Step 1. Suppose the opposite. Suppose is a multiple of , but is not. Then leaves a remainder of or when divided by .
Step 2. Remainder 1. If , then . This leaves a remainder of .
Step 3. Remainder 2. If , then . This also leaves a remainder of .
Step 4. The contradiction. In both cases is not a multiple of . But we supposed that it was.
Answer: the supposition is false, so if is a multiple of , then is a multiple of .
