Try it on paper first. A hint, the key idea and the worked solution are here when you need them.

Scandium (Z=21Z = 21Z=21), copper (Z=29Z = 29Z=29), zinc (Z=30Z = 30Z=30) and cadmium (Z=48Z = 48Z=48) are all in the d block. Decide which of them are transition elements. Give the d configuration of each atom and of the ion that decides your answer.

Need a reminder? The key ideaShowHide

The d block is groups 3 to 12. A transition element has an incomplete d subshell, with 1 to 9 electrons, in its atom or in a common ion. The 3d series fills 3d3d3d after 4s4s4s, except Cr (3d54s13d^5 4s^13d54s1) and Cu (3d104s13d^{10} 4s^13d104s1). An ion loses its 4s4s4s electrons first, so an ion Mq+\text{M}^{q+}Mq+ has Z−18−qZ - 18 - qZ−18−q electrons in 3d3d3d once both 4s4s4s electrons are gone. By Hund's rule, a subshell with ddd electrons has ddd unpaired electrons if d≤5d \le 5d≤5 and 10−d10 - d10−d if d>5d > 5d>5.

The worked solution

Have you tried it?

Work it out on paper first. It is fine to get stuck or make a mistake: that is how we learn. When you are ready, go through the solution one step at a time, and check each step against your own.

Given. Four d-block elements. The test is an incomplete d subshell in the atom or in a common ion.

Step 1. Scandium. The atom is [Ar] 3d14s2[\text{Ar}]\,3d^1 4s^2[Ar]3d14s2, with an incomplete d subshell. Scandium passes, even though Sc3+\text{Sc}^{3+}Sc3+ is 3d03d^03d0.

Step 2. Copper. The atom is 3d104s13d^{10} 4s^13d104s1, but Cu2+\text{Cu}^{2+}Cu2+ is 3d93d^93d9, which is incomplete. Copper passes.

Step 3. Zinc. The atom is 3d104s23d^{10} 4s^23d104s2 and Zn2+\text{Zn}^{2+}Zn2+ is 3d103d^{10}3d10. Both are full, so zinc fails.

Step 4. Cadmium. The atom is [Kr] 4d105s2[\text{Kr}]\,4d^{10} 5s^2[Kr]4d105s2 and Cd2+\text{Cd}^{2+}Cd2+ is 4d104d^{10}4d10. Cadmium fails like zinc.

Answer: scandium and copper are transition elements. Zinc and cadmium are d-block elements but not transition elements.

Check. Zinc, cadmium and mercury make up the last column of the d block, and all three fail.
