Try it on paper first. A hint, the key idea and the worked solution are here when you need them.
Is saturated or unsaturated? How many hydrogen atoms is it short of the alkane with six carbons? Explain why the formula alone cannot settle the question.
Alkenes have one C=C, , -ene. Alkynes have one C≡C, , -yne. A ring also takes away two hydrogens: cyclohexane is and saturated. Compare the hydrogens with to tell the type.
Have you tried it?
Work it out on paper first. It is fine to get stuck or make a mistake: that is how we learn. When you are ready, go through the solution one step at a time, and check each step against your own.
Step 1. Missing hydrogens. .
Step 2. One double bond? Then it is hexene, an alkene, and unsaturated.
Step 3. One ring? Then it is cyclohexane, with single bonds only, and saturated.
Step 4. A test decides. Hexene decolourises bromine water; cyclohexane does not.
Answer: hydrogens missing; it may be unsaturated hexene or saturated cyclohexane.
