Try it on paper first. A hint, the key idea and the worked solution are here when you need them.
Rina empties her dustbin: mango peels, a newspaper, a chips packet, a broken glass, a cotton handkerchief and an aluminium can. Sort them into biodegradable and non-biodegradable.
Biodegradable substances are broken down by decomposers, whose enzymes act only on certain substances; non-biodegradable ones, such as plastics, glass and metal cans, last for a very long time. They block drains, harm animals and can build up in food chains.
Have you tried it?
Work it out on paper first. It is fine to get stuck or make a mistake: that is how we learn. When you are ready, go through the solution one step at a time, and check each step against your own.
Step 1. Biodegradable. Mango peels, the newspaper and the cotton handkerchief.
Step 2. Non-biodegradable. The chips packet, the broken glass and the aluminium can.
