Try it on paper first. A hint, the key idea and the worked solution are here when you need them.
Use the table of the five kingdoms. (a) Which kingdoms can have autotrophic members? (b) Which kingdom has organ systems? (c) In how many kingdoms does every member have a cell wall? (d) In how many kingdoms are all the members heterotrophic?
| Feature | Monera | Protista | Fungi | Plantae | Animalia |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cell type | prokaryotic | eukaryotic | eukaryotic | eukaryotic | eukaryotic |
| Cell wall | present in most, not of cellulose; none in Mycoplasma | present in some | present, of chitin | present, of cellulose | absent |
| Body | cellular | cellular | many cells, loose tissue | tissues and organs | tissues, organs and organ systems |
| Nutrition | autotrophic or heterotrophic | autotrophic or heterotrophic | heterotrophic | autotrophic | heterotrophic |
Read each row across to compare the kingdoms. A feature belongs to every member only when the table says so for all of them. "Some" or "most" does not count.
Have you tried it?
Work it out on paper first. It is fine to get stuck or make a mistake: that is how we learn. When you are ready, go through the solution one step at a time, and check each step against your own.
(a) Autotrophic members. Monera, Protista and Plantae.
(b) Organ systems. Animalia.
(c) A wall in every member. Fungi and Plantae: kingdoms. Most Monera have a wall, but Mycoplasma has none. Protista has a wall in some members only, and Animalia has none.
(d) Always heterotrophic. Fungi and Animalia: kingdoms.
Answer: (a) Monera, Protista, Plantae; (b) Animalia; (c) ; (d) .
