Try it on paper first. A hint, the key idea and the worked solution are here when you need them.
Pentane, , has three isomers. A class draws five carbon skeletons for it:
Which drawings show the same compound? Name the three isomers.
Alkanes are saturated, , names ending in -ane. Each member of a homologous series has one more , , than the one before. Boiling points rise along the series. Isomers have the same formula and different structures.
Have you tried it?
Work it out on paper first. It is fine to get stuck or make a mistake: that is how we learn. When you are ready, go through the solution one step at a time, and check each step against your own.
Step 1. Drawings 1 and 5. Bending a chain changes nothing. Both are pentane.
Step 2. Drawings 2 and 3. Numbered from the other end, a branch on the third carbon of four sits on the second. Both are 2-methylbutane.
Step 3. Drawing 4. This is 2,2-dimethylpropane.
Answer: 1 and 5 are the same, and 2 and 3 are the same. The isomers are pentane, 2-methylbutane and 2,2-dimethylpropane.
