Try it on paper first. A hint, the key idea and the worked solution are here when you need them.
Name the process in each case.
Differentiation: cells from the meristems mature into permanent cells. Dedifferentiation: living permanent cells begin to divide again, as in the interfascicular cambium and the cork cambium. Redifferentiation: the new cells mature again. Development is growth plus differentiation. Plasticity: heterophylly by age in cotton, coriander and larkspur, and by surroundings in buttercup. Intrinsic factors are genes and growth regulators. Extrinsic factors are light, temperature, water, oxygen and nutrition.
Have you tried it?
Work it out on paper first. It is fine to get stuck or make a mistake: that is how we learn. When you are ready, go through the solution one step at a time, and check each step against your own.
Step 1. (a) A new meristem cell matures to a permanent cell: differentiation.
Step 2. (b) Living cells that had stopped dividing begin to divide: dedifferentiation.
Step 3. (c) The cells made by a meristem that came from dedifferentiation mature again: redifferentiation.
Step 4. (d) Cortex cells begin to divide again: dedifferentiation.
Answer: (a) differentiation; (b) dedifferentiation; (c) redifferentiation; (d) dedifferentiation.
